The purpose of this project is to assess the health, integrity, and water quality baseline of targeted streams and lakes in Takla Traditional Territory, aiming to prevent further declines in land health and improve areas that have been damaged. Acknowledging significant disparities between Indigenous Laws and Western Land management, the project seeks to bridge these gaps by prioritizing community focus, Indigenous-led monitoring, and understanding baseline conditions and climate change risks in the headwaters of the Skeena, Fraser, and Peace River watersheds within Takla Territory. The initiative aims to connect Takla Nation's observations, knowledge, and science to realign resource development with a focus on land stewardship. The project emphasizes engaging the community from the start, with a commitment to support community needs through the Takla Nation Lands and Stewardship team, external partners, and strategic consulting resources. The overarching goal is to develop new environmental stewardship processes and Takla Nation Laws that respect and value culture, continuously improve practices, and capture data aligned with Indigenous law for evaluation. Ultimately, the project envisions transformative solutions for climate resiliency and mitigating past damage, ensuring a sustainable future for Takla Traditional Territory.
