Northern watersheds in BC, like the Taku, are at the intersection of Indigenous Rights, reconciliation, rapid climate change, and accelerated industrial development, including mining. In response to these challenges, the Taku River Tlingit First Nation (TRT) expanded our existing Atlin-Taku Land Use Plan by establishing the Tlatsini Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) in 2023. However, despite the Taku being the heart of our traditional territory, the watershed is roadless and challenging for TRT citizens to access. Therefore, this project aims to advance the TRT vision of revitalizing deep cultural connections to the Taku watershed and promoting forward-looking stewardship like the Tlatsini IPCA by enhancing community access, informing and supporting watershed stewardship through community-engaged research and monitoring, and sharing the Taku story locally and broadly to showcase TRT initiatives and catalyze positive change in other regions.
