Tsilhqot'in-led water quality and water and fish habitat monitoring program
Tsilhqot'in National Government
This project is developing a monitoring plan based on Nation-wide priorities, to be developed and implemented in a staged and iterative way and designed for specific monitoring components. The Tŝilhqot’in Territory, home to pristine watersheds and crucial salmon habitat, faces threats from industrial activities and climate change. To address this, the Tŝilhqot’in Nation initiated a monitoring program focusing on small streams in key salmon nurseries. This builds on the 2021-22 HWI project, establishing a Water Quality and Quantity Monitoring Program. Despite challenges like forest fires and landscape changes, the project aims to strengthen the team's skills, invest in data management, and identify critical areas for data collection. The goal is well-trained staff, ensuring data sovereignty and supporting indigenous water governance by 2024. This initiative not only mentors future stewards but also aligns with UNDRIP, incorporates Indigenous knowledge, and connects communities to their land. It provides essential data for watershed restoration, supports guardian programs, and informs climate adaptation planning while engaging communities in watershed health education.
