The goal of this project is to restore estuary ecosystems and Chinook (kwu7s) salmon populations through the restoration and monitoring of key areas within the Squamish estuary. Specifically, this project will undertake construction and infrastructure modifications to restore a healthy tidal exchange between the Squamish river and estuary. In doing so, it will restore fish accessibility for out-migrating juvenile Chinook salmon during most tidal cycles. The project also includes a monitoring program associated with the physical works and studying juvenile kwu7s salmon movement (and other salmonids) as they move into the estuary and Átl’ḵ'a7tsem (Howe Sound).
