Both the Marble and Mahatta watersheds bear significant forest harvesting histories and legacy issues, including bank instability, habitat degradation, and fish barriers. The primary objectives of this project encompass building on existing data collection for stream health, fish habitat, and fish populations, developing restoration plans, and initiating a monitoring program for all forestry activities in these watersheds. Additionally, the project aims to establish long-term management and restoration plans informed by ongoing monitoring and expand Quatsino capacity for watershed monitoring, assessment, and data collection through training and mentoring. The Quatsino First Nation prioritizes the development of restoration and management plans for these watersheds, aligning with the objectives outlined in the 2020 Quatsino Land Use Plan. The overarching goal is to foster resilient, healthy watersheds capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change, contributing to the rebuilding of robust salmon populations, ensuring food security, and sustaining the Quatsino way of life.
