The Nuxalk Nation, shaped by the interconnection of four distinct regions defined by their use of watersheds, faces challenges in accessing ancestral territories and vital food sources. This project aims to address this by enabling community-based monitoring of under-accessed systems and connecting community members to ancestral watersheds for sustainable food and medicine harvesting. Divided into two programs—Family Territorial Harvest and Community Harvest and Mentorship—the initiative seeks to strengthen ancestral governance practices, traditional stewardship knowledge, and community food security. The goal is to advance Nuxalk culture, support healing, and diffuse pressures on the Bella Coola river system while fostering partnerships with Nuxalk departments and organizations.
