Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations

Photo: Nature Based Solutions Foundation

The purpose of this project is to document Nuu-chah-nulth laws and governance within the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation, particularly focusing on the responsibility of the ha’wiih (hereditary leaders) to oversee the ha-houlthee (chiefly territories comprising lands, waters, air, and people). The documentation and codification of these laws, with community support, will empower MMFN to safeguard the Nation’s watersheds from threats such as industrial logging. This includes the establishment of salmon parks and assisting the MMFN Council of Chiefs in reclaiming governance over these vital territories.
