The purpose of this project is to build trails to access 10 salmon-bearing rivers and streams, and assess their restoration needs and develop site specific restoration plans. The Hesquiaht Access, Assessment, and Restoration Project aims to build trails for accessing 10 salmon-bearing rivers and streams and assess their restoration needs, with site-specific plans. Led by a project manager and a Hesquiaht Fisheries guardian, the project will train 6 nation members in trail building and environmental assessment, fostering engagement in traditional stewardship. Set in the South Coast - Pacific Ocean Seaboard region, the project emphasizes hiring youth and involves community members in watershed activities. The goal is to build stewardship capacity within the Nation, guided by Indigenous practices, including assessments rooted in Indigenous Knowledge supported by western scientific methods. Restoration planning will focus on increasing community access to traditional resources.
