Witset First Nation, Wet’suwet’en First Nation (WFN), and Gitanyow First Nation (GFN) have a collective goal to complete 1-2 Routine Watershed Assessments (RWA) within their respective territories (a maximum of 6 assessments). There are known impacts (e.g., road density, equivalent clear-cut area) on the ecological functioning of the selected watersheds, and as First Nation communities rely on the ecological function of watersheds to provide medicines, foods, and items used in ceremony, it is of utmost importance to protect and restore watersheds. The assessments will provide information to develop plans for the watersheds to protect, restore, or mitigate through further identification of the key issues. The project will strengthen First Nation relations in the Skeena watershed through nation-to-nation field training and protocol development. Project leads and partners will also share project results with the community to strengthen community, particularly youth (K-12), connection to land and water.
