The purpose of this project is to develop a current snapshot of the environmental health of community and scientifically identified high value streams and their associated estuaries. This new project aims to fill the gaps in watershed information for the territories of the Lax Kw’alaams nine tribes. Figure 1 illustrates the territories of the Nine Tribes of Lax Kw’alaams, located in the Skeena and Nass River lower basins, and the Skeena/Nass archipelago of islands in the marine approach areas. Each of the nine tribes of Lax Kw’alaams has its own territories that align perfectly with the tributary watersheds of the Skeena and approach island archipelagos. The “Determination of Lax Kw’alaams Watershed and Island Archipelago Aquatic Stewardship Priorities” project will focus on environmental and indigenous law ground-truthing to: 1) Gather comprehensive scientific and indigenous ecological data for high-priority fish-bearing systems, 2) Translation of indigenous story/law to case law to better guide the work of staff related to aquatic stewardship, 3) Support the continuation of aquatics-related governance development through committee and community meetings, data analysis of TUS information.
